gayzette examines when marriage will come to Colorado

Civil rights in this country move in one direction, forward, so it’s not a question of if but rather a question of when Colorado will legally recognize gay marriage.  Nic Garcia has an excellent two page article in the new issue of gayzette examining that question.

  • Could a court declare equal rights in Colorado?
  • How about the Supreme Court?
  • What about another ballot initiative?
  • What’s being done currently to achieve equal rights in CO?

To answer these questions Nic got a diversity of differing opinions of activists, politicians, and community leaders and citizens.

Click here to read the full gayzette issue online (the article is on pages 8 and 9) or click here for just the article on gayzetteblog.

Obama issues June Pride Month proclamation, fails to mention repeal of DOMA

Update: The Advocate is reporting Obama’s proclamation contains a factual error claiming “I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration.” The Advocate notes Bill Clinton appointed Roberta Achtenberg as Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity on February 2, 1993.  Full Advocate story here.

June is LGBT Pride Month and the Obama administration just released a proclaimation:

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release June 1, 2009

LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2009

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.

Denver queer Adam Kretz fired for being gay

Photo from Adam's Connexion profile.

Photo from Adam's Connexion profile.

Those here familiar with Adam knew he was tremendously excited to be leaving Denver to take a teaching position at an English language school in Korea.  He was scheduled to leave on August 1st.

Adam wrote a diary on DailyKos.com about what went down so I’ll quote from that:

The Director [of the school in Korea] told me that one of his faculty members had discovered that I wrote a pro-gay article for a website, and had mentioned gay rights events on my Twitter feed.

So he asked me, point blank: “Are you a gay?”

I was not only taken aback, I didn’t quite know what to say. So I responded the only way I knew how.

“Yes, I’m gay.”

Adam continues:

I was told that someone of my “identity, politics, and religious persuasion (I’m an Episcopalian, and I can go toe-to-toe with just about anyone on biblical history, revisionism, and interpretational theology) wasn’t welcomed at their school. Just like that. 7 weeks until I leave. I quit my job, sold my apartment, car and belongings, and had spent hundreds on Korean lessons, only to be told that not only could I not come teach, I was not entitled to recourse with my contract. Korean law (or so they said, any help legal folks???) allows them to void the contract willy-nilly. I was offered $3,000 and told that this was the best I could hope for.

I’d encourage you to read Adam’s entire story here on Daily Kos.

Full disclosure: I am acquainted with Adam but do not know him well.
